Marcus, previously known as Swathe, arrived at Carolina Tiger Rescue on September 13, 2011. He was rescued when the Wild Animal Orphanage (WAO), in Texas, closed its doors due to funding issues and faced mandatory euthanization. He came to WAO in 2003 from a court-ordered seizure of 24 tigers from Tigers Only Preservation Society (TOPS) in New Jersey.
Marcus was a shy cat. He did not like loud noises and he would sometimes move out of sight when he saw people he didn't know approaching. Unfortunately, Marcus had not been here long before Keepers noticed changed in his eating habits. He would frequently hang his head in his water dish. A vet exam determined that he had an untreatable tumor in his mouth. Staff did the best they could to manage his symptoms and control his pain; however, as his condition deteriorated, staff and veterinarians decided the time had come to euthanize.
The tragedy of Marcus was that upon his arrival with 3 other tigers, he was the most social and friendly- but the tumor may have already been developing, so we may never have gotten to see Marcus as his true self. We are glad we were able to fulfill our promise to him- providing loving and attentive care for the rest of his life.
